One of them said she had to wait three years to attend a counsellor after she contacted a rape crisis centre.

The two women, who were abused by predator Christopher O'Mahony, were speaking after the former council rates collector was jailed yesterday for nine years.

O'Mahony's victims - his daughter Emma O'Shaughnessy and his sister-in-law Helen Costelloe - wanted him identified and waived the right to anonymity.

The two survivors thanked Judge Sinead McMullan for her “sensitive” handling of the matter as well as Detective Garda James Muldowney, who led the investigation, and their legal team.
