Backing non party hopeful 'balderdash'

FINE Gael leader Simon Harris has slammed the suggestion his party councillors should facilitate the nomination of independent candidates to run for president.

He described the idea that his councillors should be expected to back anyone other than party candidate Heather Humphreys as “balderdash”.

To be eligible to run in the election, a candidate must be nominated either by 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local authorities.
