A FULL-SCALE digital scan of the Titanic wreck has revealed the destruction of how the doomed liner ripped in two.

The 3D replica, developed from more than 700,000 images, sheds fresh light on the ship's final hours after it struck an iceberg in 1912, claiming more than 1,500 lives.

The scan provides a new view of a boiler room, confirming witness accounts that engineers worked until the end to keep the ship's lights on.

A computer simulation also suggests iceberg punctures along the hull each the size of an A4 sheet of paper - led to the vessel's demise.

Titanic analyst Parks Stephenson said. "It's like a crime scene: you need to see what the evidence is, in the context of where it is.

"And having a comprehensive view of the entirety of the wreck site is key to understanding what happened."

The project was led by National Geographic and Atlantic Productions for the documentary Titanic: The Digital Resurrection.
