England boss Shaun Wane is backing his captain George Williams to rediscover his best form ahead of the Ashes series.

Williams endured a difficult campaign as part of Sam Burgess' Warrington Wolves side, which struggled to find consistency and missed out on the Super League playoffs after winning just 10 games all season.

The Wolves were still reeling from their heartbreaking Challenge Cup Final loss to KR at Wembley in June, a dramatic defeat that cast a long shadow over their year.

In contrast, Mikey Lewis has been an outstanding cog as the Red and Whites completed a Super League treble trophy haul - with many feeling he should be in the starting lineup.

But Wane remains confident that Williams will rise to the occasion when it matters most.

"George will play," said Wane, who has worked with Williams since he was just 13.
