The Proms are a celebration of music, not patriotism

I REJECT Peter Auty's letter (Mail Box, September 23) in which he criticises promenaders at the last night of the Proms for waving EU flags because, he suggests the Last Night of the Proms is a celebration of all that is good about the UK.

The Proms has never been about promoting a nationalistic popularist UK identify, rather it is, and always has been, about celebrating and sharing the enjoyment of fantastic music and musicians, composers and singers from around the world. This is, and always has been, the aim of the Proms, to call it otherwise is simply wrong.
