SC criticises ED's low rate of conviction

The Supreme Court on Wednesday questioned the Enforcement Directorate's low rate of conviction in cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act even as it agreed to examine the bail plea of former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee, who has been in jail for two years, adding that it is easy for politicians to engage in corruption and then claim innocence.
Chatterjee filed the bail plea in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in academic staff recruitment in the eastern state and is currently in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The bench headed by Justice Surya Kant agreed to examine the details of the CBI custody on December 2.
