Rajasthan minister Surendra Pal Singh on Monday lost an assembly byelection in Karanpur by a margin of 11,283 votes to his Congress rival Rupinder Singh Kooner, in a result that came as an embarrassment to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) only weeks after it formed the government in the state.

Raj minister loses to Cong rival in key bypoll

Polling for Karanpur in Sri Ganganagar district was postponed due to the death of Congress candidate and then legislator Gurmeet Singh Kooner, 75, on November 15. The Congress then fielded his son Rupinder from the seat. According to the chief electoral office, the Congress candidate won 94,950 votes against Singh's 83,667 after 18 rounds of counting.
