Opposition parties on Monday questioned the intentions of the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the launch of the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states and Union territories, calling the move a “conspiracy against democracy”.

The BJP, however, defended the decision and called the Opposition a “herd of dissatisfied souls”.

The enumeration process will cover Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal, which are due for assembly elections in 2026. The remaining ones are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The announcement has since sparked sharp reactions from non-NDA parties.
