Expert of anti-insurgency operations set to helm state

A former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who played a role in ending the two-decades old insurgency in Mizoram, Lalduhoma is set to become the chief minister of the northeastern state, after his party the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) - secured a clear victory in the assembly elections.
Lalduhoma's win has been years in the making and marks the political zenith of a 74-year-old whose slow, but steady, rise has seen him play key roles in Mizoram since the state's nascent days.
Born to a family of farmers at Tualpui village in Champhai district, Lalduhoma, the youngest of four siblings, completed his school in Champhai before graduating from Gauhati University. He worked for five years, from 1972 to 1977, as principal assistant in the Mizoram chief minister's office, and got selected for the IPS in 1977.
