Delhi CJ Manmohan appointed SC judge

The Union government on Tuesday announced the appointment of Justice Manmohan, chief justice of the Delhi high court, as a judge of the Supreme Court.

The appointment was notified after President Droupadi Murmu's approval following a recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium last month.

Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the news on X, stating: "In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India."

Justice Manmohan's elevation comes at a time when the Supreme Court is operating with two vacancies, and his appointment is expected to enhance the representation of the Delhi high court in the country's top court.

On November 28, the Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, recommended justice Manmohan's elevation. The fivemember collegium, also comprising justices Bhushan R Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy and Abhay S Oka, underscores a blend of considerations, including seniority, merit, integrity and the need to maintain adequate representation of the Delhi high court in the Supreme Court.
