Al-Golani: The HTS leader who plotted Assad's ouster

Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the militant leader whose stunning insurgency toppled Syria's President Bashar Assad, has spent years working to remake his public image, renouncing long-time ties to Al-Qaeda and depicting himself as a champion of pluralism and tolerance. In his first public appearance on Sunday, the 42-year-old al-Golani - labelled a terrorist by the US - called the fall of Bashar Assad "a victory to the Islamic nation".

Al-Golani and his insurgent force, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS - many of whose fighters are jihadis - have now emerged as a key player in Syria after the fall of Assad.
