The death toll in the building collapse at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur rose to three after the body of a missing patient was recovered late Saturday night, hours after the third-floor balcony of the medicine ward caved in, bringing down the second-floor ceiling and corridor and trapping several patients under the debris, officials said on Sunday.
JAMSHEDPUR:
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, leaving at least three people trapped. While two patients were pulled out dead and two others rescued—one of them critically injured—search operations continued through the night for the remaining victim.
MGMMCH superintendent Dr. RK Mandhan confirmed that three bodies have been recovered from the debris—the last one at around 1:30 a.m. by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team on Saturday night. "The deceased people were identified as 76-year-old David Johnson, a resident of Straight Mile Road in Sakchi, 61-year-old Lukas Simon Tirkey, a resident of Gadra in Govindpur, and Srichand Tanti of Seraikela. The critically injured Renuka Devi has been shifted to Tata Main Hospital (TMH)," Dr. Mandhan told HT on Sunday.
According to officials close to the developments, 83-year-old Renuka Devi was admitted to MGMMCH along with her 65-year-old visually impaired son, Srichand Tanti, who had stomach ailments.
