While many pancreatic conditions can be managed through medications or endoscopic procedures, surgery remains a key treatment for several serious pancreatic diseases. Advancements in surgical techniques, such as laparoscopic and robotic procedures, along with improved perioperative care, have made pancreatic surgery safer and more effective than ever.

WHEN IS SURGERY NEEDED FOR PANCREATIC DISORDERS?

Surgery is not always the first line of treatment for pancreatic conditions. However, it becomes necessary in specific cases:

• Acute Necrotising Pancreatitis: A patient with persistent fever, with infected collections not responding to conservative medical and interventional management, needs surgical management. Complications arising because of pancreatitis, like bowel necrosis and perforation, need urgent surgery. Patients with symptoms like failure to thrive resulting from acute necrotising pancreatitis and its complications often end up in surgery.
