January 02, 2025

The ministry of home affairs (MHA) has amended the model prison manual to address the issue of caste-based discrimination among inmates, officials aware of the matter said on Wednesday.

- Neeraj Chauhan

NEW DELHI:

The changes have been made in compliance with the October 2024 Supreme Court judgment in Sukanya Shantha vs Union of India, which ended the long-standing practice of caste-based discrimination in prisons, declaring the provisions in prison manuals that perpetuate it as unconstitutional and calling for immediate reforms.
