Thackeray memorial designed to withstand deluge like 2005, says structural engineer

The seafront and underground Balasaheb Thackeray National Memorial in Dadar has employed a cutting-edge 'double-wall flask' technology—used for the first time in India for a memorial.

MUMBAI: This design ensures protection against water leakage, even during extreme weather events such as the devastating July 26, 2005, Mumbai floods, revealed the structural engineering firm of the memorial.

On Friday, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray, accompanied by his son Aaditya, inspected the site at the Mayor's bungalow in Dadar. The memorial is expected to open to the public in January 2026, marking the beginning of Balasaheb Thackeray's birth centenary year. Uddhav announced the completion of the memorial's first phase and revealed that work on the second phase would commence soon.
