SC raps MCD for not maintaining Gumti

The Supreme Court on Thursday pulled up the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for failing to ensure sanitation and upkeep around the 700-year-old Lodi-era Gumti of Shaikh Ali monument in Defence Colony, warning the civic body that officers will be held accountable for disobeying its orders.

- Abraham Thomas

A bench of justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and SVN Bhatti directed MCD commissioner Ashwani Kumar, who was summoned to court, to submit a time-bound proposal for completing the pending cleaning, electrification, and maintenance works. The bench noted that MCD’s inaction suggested an “ego issue” between the civic body and the Delhi government's archaeology department, which is handling the restoration of the monument.
