SC: Essential to cut down city's daily untreated waste

The Supreme Court on Tuesday told Delhi's civic bodies that all efforts should be made to reduce the 27% of solid municipal waste which is left untreated daily.

NEW DELHI: The top court passed the order in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by lawyer-activist MC Mehta.

"Rule 4 of the 2016 Rules places obligations on various entities, including waste generators, vendors, resident associations, and businesses. If implemented in true spirit, it will go a long way in reducing the generation of solid waste every day," a bench headed by Justice Abhay S Oka said.

The Delhi government in an affidavit said waste processing facilities are unable to treat 27% of the daily waste generated from homes, offices, markets, commercial complexes, schools, colleges, hospitals, and government institutions.
