Some spicy contests apart, the Ranji Trophy second round matches also saw two batters show they carried plenty of class in domestic cricket before suggesting that they were cut out of the India Test squad prematurely. Ajinkya Rahane had hit 159 and Karun Nair an unbeaten 174.
While both their matches were drawn, points were secured for the first innings lead by Mumbai against Chhattisgarh as well as Karnataka against Goa.
Mohammed Shami did the talking first, conveying to selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar and his panel that it was not his job to inform them about his fitness to be recalled to the India team. Agarkar had said the selectors were not convinced about the match fitness of the metronomic pacer.
