An assailant drove a car into people outside a synagogue on Thursday in northern England and then began stabbing them, killing two and seriously wounding four ina terrorist attack on the holiest day of the Jewish year, police said, adding they shot dead the suspect in the terrorist attack, AP and AFP reported.
Police said the two dead victims were Jewish. The synagogue was packed with worshippers at the time on account of the Yom Kippur holiday, the holiest in the Jewish calendar.
Police revealed they had “established the identity” of the dead suspect, but it was too soon to release it publicly. Two other people were arrested after the car and stabbing attack, they added. The Metropolitan Police in London, who lead counterterrorism policing operations, declared the assault a terrorist attack.
The attack came days ahead of the second anniversary of Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
