Whey protein and hair loss: Is there a connection?

Whey protein, derived from cow's milk during cheese-making, is popular among fitness lovers for its high-quality protein content. Moderate consumption can benefit muscle growth, weight loss, and overall health. However, this supplement has its share of side effects—a major one being hair loss.

It can have an indirect impact on some people, especially those with a family history of hair loss," says aesthetic physician and cosmetologist Dr Karuna Malhotra.

She adds that it may also influence hormone levels leading to higher production of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), known to shrink hair follicles. Some people are also likely to experience an allergic reaction to this supplement. "This can cause inflammation, which may also contribute to hair loss," adds the expert.
