BENGALURU: The Karnataka government's decision to introduce a garbage collection fee in Bengaluru from April 1 has sparked sharp criticism from opposition leaders, with the BJP accusing the Congress-led administration of imposing an unnecessary financial burden on citizens. Union minister Pralhad Joshi and several other BJP leaders have lashed out at the government, alleging that it has resorted to excessive taxation due to financial mismanagement.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has mandated a "solid waste management user fee," requiring property owners to pay for garbage collection and disposal services every month. While the state government insists that this measure is essential for improving waste management infrastructure in the city, the opposition has labelled it a desperate move to generate revenue.
