“SHOCKED” Devon and Cornwall police and crime commissioner has questioned the reasoning behind Labour's decision to abolish her role and give her oversight powers to local mayors and council leaders.

- by CARL EVE carleve@reachplc.com @DevonLiveNews

The Government will abolish the PCC role in 2028 when the next elections are set to be held to save at least £100 million and help fund neighbourhood policing. Policing minister Sarah Jones announced the move in the Commons last week, telling MPs the model had shown little sign of improving confidence in policing. She said less than a quarter of voters turned out to vote for PCCs in the 2024 elections, and two in five people are “unaware PCCs even exist”.

In response to the news local PCC Alison Hernandez said: “I am shocked... and we are still working out what this means for the people of Devon and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and for the staff in my office. I want to assure all members of the public that my office and I are still going to be here for the next two-and-a-half years and we will continue to hold the police to account on your behalf.
