University will not remove rapper's song from syllabus

In a jolt to Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Calicut University has decided not to remove Malayalam Rapper Vedan’s (Hirandas Murali) song and singer Gowry Lekshmi's Kathakali music from BA Malayalam third-semester syllabus, against the advice of an expert appointed by the vice chancellor at the instance of the governor.

The decision to retain the controversial portions in the syllabus was confirmed by Dr MS Ajith, chairman of the Under Graduate Malayalam Board of Studies.
Dr MM Basheer, former head of the Malayalam Department, who was appointed by Vice-Chancellor P Raveendran to review the matter, had recommended the removal of Vedan’s Bhumi Njan Vazhunna Idam (The Earth, I Live In) and Gowry Lekshmi’s Kathakali music from the syllabus.
