UN report rejects Kabul's claim on no militants operating from its soil

A report of the UN Security Council has expressed serious doubts over repeated claims by the Afghan Taliban that no militant groups are operating from Afghan soil, declaring such assertions “not credible.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan's Foreign Office on Thursday said the UNSC report confirming the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan supports Islamabad’s long-held position, warning that such elements pose a grave threat to regional peace and stability.

At a weekly news briefing, Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Tahir Andarabi said Pakistan has credible and verifiable evidence that terrorist groups are operating from Afghan soil with support.

He said Islamabad has also received fresh intelligence, including details of militants numbers, identities and financing, which can be presented at international forums.

The UNSC report warned that neighbouring countries are increasingly viewing Afghanistan as a potential centre of regional instability.

The findings are contained in the 16th report of the UN Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, released amid growing international concern over Afghanistan’s security situation.

According to the report, while the Taliban have consistently maintained that no terrorist organisations are present or operating from Afghanistan, this claim does not align with intelligence shared by multiple UN member states.
