Lebanese army plans to carry out 'sensitive missions'

Lebanon's military will soon carry out “sensitive missions,” the country’s army chief said late on Friday, in an apparent reference to the Lebanese government’s US-backed plan to disarm the Hizbollah militant group by the end of the year.

Lebanon's military will take necessary steps to ensure the missions’ success while preserving peace among the civilian population in the crisis-hit nation, General Rodolphe Haykal said in a statement.

Lebanon has a US-backed plan to disarm Hizbollah as well as Palestinian weapons in the country’s refugee camps.

The Lebanese government asked the army in early August to come up with a plan to disarm Hizbollah by the end of the month.

The prime minister's office said in a statement that the Cabinet will hold a meeting to discuss the plan on Sept. 5.
