AI could help detect hard- to-spot breast cancers early, UCLA study finds

A new study from UCLA Health's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center suggests artificial intelligence (AI) could help detect breast cancers that develop between routine screenings known as interval cancers before they become advanced. Early detection could lead to better treatment and improved patient outcomes.

Published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the study found AI could identify mammographically-visible interval cancers by flagging subtle signs that radiologists might miss. These include tumours faint on mammograms or otherwise difficult to detect with the human eye. Researchers estimate using AI could reduce interval breast cancers by about 30 per cent.
