Library fit-out chosen 'could have impact on type of funds available'

ESTIMATED COST OF WORKS RANGE BETWEEN £12.3M AND £13.6M

- By IVAN MORRIS POXTON

COUNCILLORS have discussed ways to fund Grimsby Central Library's fit-out after asbestos removal and roof works, including possible cultural funding.

The building closed to the public in March 2025 after water ingress.

A report by WT Partnership Ltd estimates it will not reopen until 2029. Cost estimates range, dependent on three fit-out options, between £12.3m to a maximum £13.6m.

It was agreed last year to create a libraries select committee to look at the future of North East Lincolnshire's libraries service. It was presented with the report on Grimsby Central Library.

'A number of unknowns'

"While we're confident that we have created a fit-out that's appropriate for the building, there are a number of unknowns," said WT Partnership's Matt Simpson of the fit-out options and costs.

All three fit-out options include bringing back into use the basement, ground floor and mezzanine levels at the library.

Options have been costed in outline for the upper floors. The options comprise:

■ Minimum - "shell, core fit-out" for floors 1-3; cost estimate £12.3m.

■ Medium - floors 1-3 basic office or community fit-out, which Mr Simpson described as "functional, but just no bells and whistles with it"; £13m.
