FMD vaccines now critical

"We are now moving further out into the 10km radius, but currently do not have enough vaccines to cover everyone, so we are prioritising according to risk.

"If the case in George tests positive, we do not have enough vaccines to treat all the farms in that area right now, but hopefully we will soon have sufficient supply if it becomes necessary."

Janse van Rensburg said once they have enough resources after the outbreak has stabilised, other areas can also be treated. She expressed the hope that a system would be in place by that time for the private vets to assist their clients voluntarily with vaccinations, again as the vaccines become available.

Two private local vets have already applied in this regard under the Animal Disease Act.
