DESPITE SETTING a target of achieving 30% electric vehicle (EV) penetration by the end of this decade and introducing several incentives, India continues to lag behind its own targets, raising serious concerns about the pace of progress, Niti Aayog said on Monday.

- NITIN KUMAR

It called for a shift in approach towards EVs, moving from incentives to mandates and disincentives, focusing on high-potential vehicle segments and geographies and enabling financing for electric buses and trucks.

Global EV penetration stands at around 17%, while India is at just under 8%, said Niti Aayog member Rajiv Gauba during the launch of 'Unlocking a $200 Billion Opportunity: Electric Vehicles in India' report.

He noted that while India has made significant progress in electrifying two-wheelers and three-wheelers, adoption in other categories remains sluggish.
