Marbles should stay here says minister as row grows

THE row between the UK and Greek governments over the Parthenon Sculptures intensified today as a minister insisted they should stay at the British Museum despite talk of a loan arrangement.
Athens has long demanded the return of the historic works, also known as the Elgin Marbles, which were removed from Greece by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century when he was British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.
Greece’s premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis had been expected to sit down with Rishi Sunak, right, during a visit to London but his aides said No 10 cancelled the meeting, and offered Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden instead.
