GSK to buy asthma drug maker Aiolos for £1.1bn

THE first major takeover of 2024 sparked life into London's M&A market today when pharma giant GSK unveiled plans to buy asthma drug maker Aiolos Bio in a $1.4 billion (£1.1 billion) deal.

The FTSE 100 firm will make a $1 billion upfront payment with a subsequent performance-based fee of up to $400 million.
The acquisition will bring promising asthma drugs into GSK's portfolio, including Aiolos' AIO-001, an antibody ready to enter phase II clinical development for the treatment of adult patients, which enables GSK to reach a subset of severe asthma patients not catered for by its other respiratory drugs Nucala and Depemokimab.
Aiolos Bio is based in San Francisco and also has offices at King's Cross. It launched just three months ago, after raising $245 million from investors including Atlas Venture and Bain. The deal is subject to regulatory clearance, including in the US.
