Religious and race hate crime up in UK and locally

DERBYSHIRE Consatbulary reported 2,305 hate crime offences in the last year, as figures rose nationally for the first time in three years - including increases in both racially and religiously motivated offences.

Derbyshire actually saw a small drop, from 2,321 in 2023/24, although in both the categories of offences where motivating factor was religion (119, up from 106) and race (1,618, up from 1,547), there was a rise.

Hate crimes targeted at Muslims were up by almost a fifth, with the Home Office noting a spike in these offences after the Southport murders last summer and the riots which followed.
