Public's relief as safety patrols are stepped up

SHOPPERS and businesses have welcomed increased public safety patrols in Derby city centre, saying they feel safer and have seen a boost in trade.

Derby City Council leader Nadine Peatfield said shoppers would see more public protection officers (PPOs) on the streets to reassure visitors following high-profile crimes.

A fatal stabbing, a daylight robbery and an incident involving a man wielding a spade have blighted the city centre this year, prompting huge concern and debate over public safety in the area.

Cllr Peatfield wrote to the Home Secretary asking for more police officers around Derby amid public concerns.

She said the council has recently recruited more PPOs to its team.

These officers do not have police powers but can issue fines and provide visibility and public reassurance.

Cllr Peatfield said: “Our newly recruited PPOs will be deployed in the coming weeks.
