KILLER STARTS SENTENCE OF AT LEAST 25 YEARS FOR MOTIVELESS CRIME
MURDERER Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur has been sentenced to life in prison and will serve a minimum of 25 years for stabbing to death a loving father-of-three in the St Peter's Street branch of Lloyds Bank in Derby.
The victim, 37-year-old Gurvinder Singh Johal who ran the Hens and Chickens Bar and Grill in Queensferry Gardens, Shelton Lock, was standing in a queue when he was attacked by the 47-year-old defendant on the afternoon of May 6, this year.
The killer had entered the UK illegally months earlier in a small boat and had been refused asylum by the Home Office. The court was told Nur was born in Somalia and paid £400 to be brought to the UK illegally.
The defendant, of Western Road, Normanton, was arrested later the same day at his address. At a hearing in August he pleaded guilty to his murder.
He was arrested on his arrival "in a small boat" in September, 2024, and the Home Office refused his application for asylum. He appealed, and that was the position at the time of the murder.
Customers and staff inside the branch witnessed the horrific killing and Mr Johal, known as Danny, was declared dead at the scene.
Shocking footage played in court showed Nur drunkenly enter the bank, pull a knife from his waistband and plunge it into the chest of Mr Johal, who was video-calling a friend as he stood in a queue waiting to withdraw money.
