Knowing the subtle distinctions can help you respond faster and protect the family, says CAMILLA FOSTER

AS pressure mounts on the NHS in winter, concerns are growing over the cases of flu across the country.

But with colds circulating widely during winter, how can you tell which illness you're dealing with?

Here is some advice on how to spot the key differences to help you safeguard your health and keep your family well.

What causes flu and cold?

Colds and flu are both respiratory illnesses but are caused by different viruses.

"Colds are primarily caused by viruses, with rhinovirus being the most common culprit," says Dr Naveed Asif, GP at The London General Practice. "Whereas, the flu is specifically caused by influenza viruses, primarily types A and B." Therefore, it's possible to have a cold and flu at the same time.

"Both have peaks during the cold season and can run your immune system down, making you susceptible to further infections," says Dr Asif.

Are they both contagious? Does flu and a cold spread in a similar way?
