NEW food caddies are on the way for Derby households - but one councillor claims some residents “can’t be bothered” to use them.

- By NIGEL SLATER Local democracy reporter

From March next year, Derby City Council, as well as authorities nationwide, will have weekly food collections in a bid to be more environmentally friendly.

This means that from January, Derby households will be provided with new caddies in which to place food waste.

Households will get a dark green outdoor food waste container with a lockable lid and a smaller light grey kitchen caddy for worktops.

Fortnightly collections will remain the same in Derby, meaning black, blue and brown bins will still be collected.

But from March 31, food waste will be recycled through anaerobic digestion which is described as “a natural process that breaks it down in an enclosed system” and “reduces carbon emissions”.
