DERBY County’s journey in the Carabao Cup was halted by Burnley as Oliver Sonne’s goal sealed a 2-1 win for Scott Parker’s side at Turf Moor.

- By LEIGH CURTIS

Derby had fallen behind after five minutes as Aaron Ramsey gave the hosts the lead before Bobby Clark levelled with a super finish.

But Sonne wrapped up the win in stoppage time when he rolled the ball beyond Vickers as the Clarets booked their place in round three.

It took only five minutes for Burnley to open the scoring as they went through the gears in a rapid counter attack.

The move ended with Armando Broja poking a ball into the path of Aaron Ramsey, who lashed in a super finish. Josh Vickers did well to get a hand to but he just couldn’t keep it out.

It seemed at that stage that Derby were going into be in for a long night, particularly with Loum Tchaouna, a £12m signing from Lazio, looking a threat with his speed and direct running.

But gradually Derby began to make their presence felt, as Joe Ward flashed a shot wide before Derby drew level with a goal of real quality.

The impressive Rhian Brewster set the ball rolling with a lovely cushioned pass from which Callum Elder did not have to break stride.

He immediately fed the ball into the path of Bobby Clark, whose first touch took him past a desperate lunge from ex-Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall, before he crashed in a super finish.

It was a wonderful goal but they were thankful for Vickers after that when he made an important stop to thwart Zian Flemming’s header, which he pushed away from danger.

With both sides hoping to avoid penalties, Tchaouna came close to adding a second for Burnley when his shot hit the foot of the post and came back out.

Jaydon Banel had an effort that Vickers saved before Matt Clarke headed over at the other end as both sides looked for a winner.

But up popped Sonne to score with virtually the last kick.

Here are some of the talking points from the game.
