Star Trek first aired on September 8, 1966, and has since spawned 11 spin-off shows. That's 950 episodes all together, across 50 seasons of telly.

Creator Gene Roddenberry said the show was inspired by Jonathan Swift's 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels, as well as the Horatio Hornblower books by C.S. Forester.
