MICHAEL van Gerwen said he hopes to win the World Darts Championship to put to bed his “worst year ever”.

The world No.3 has split from his wife of 11 years Daphne and is getting divorced.

At the same time his dad Henri is having cancer treatment.

Van Gerwen, 36, has not won a single ranked major all season and failed to qualify for the Players Championship Final for the first time.

He has admitted his personal woes have disrupted his darts.

The three-time world champion has had to change his practice routine to look after kids Zoe, eight, and Mike, five, who are his “priority”.

But he is still backing himself to lift a fourth world title.
