Sales of the little-known lagotto romagnolo, above, from Italy, are soaring after the monarch welcomed cute puppy Snuff into the Royal family.

But some blue-blooded folk have kept much more unusual critters for pets, as JAMES MOORE reveals...

LIZZIE'S LIZARD:

Queen Elizabeth II, known for her love of corgis, once had a pet chameleon. At 15, Lord Louis Mountbatten gave her one of the colour-changing creatures as a gift. She and sister Margaret fed it on dead flies and kept it in a box lined with pages from etiquette manual Debrett’s. When it died, Princess Elizabeth buried the animal in a special white coffin.
