The annual event takes place on August 12 to commemorate the date Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877.

IN RECORD TIME

Records have been around longer than you think. They were invented in 1888 by German-American Emile Berliner, who made the first versions out of vulcanised rubber. He later used shellac - a resin secreted by the female lac bug - mixed with slate dust to create a harder-wearing product.
