72nd-hole heroics set up Rory win

- by ANDY DEAN

RORY MCILROY created the sort of roar that is usually reserved for a football stadium as he delighted a huge K Club crowd to win his second Irish Open title.

The world No.2 sank a stunning 25ft eagle putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff with Sweden's Joakim Lagergren after the pair finished locked on 17 under.

McIlroy had to make the putt just to prolong the event in County Kildare after Lagergren’s own stunning eagle at the 16th.

And the home crowd let him know just how much they were behind him by creating a deafening sound as the ball dropped into the hole.

After the first two extra holes were tied in birdie fours, Lagergren found the water hazard third time around to allow McIlroy to win it with two putts.
