THE original Birkin bag, made for actress and singer Jane Birkin, has sold for a record-breaking £7.4million.

One of the oldest-known handbags is actually a manbag. It belonged to Otzi the Iceman, a 5,000-year-old traveller whose mummified remains were found on the Austrian-Italian border in 1991. Made of hazelnut wood, covered in fur and leather, he was using it to hold survival equipment.

Blokes were also seen carrying handbags in Ancient Egypt. A statue of state official Niankhpepikem, dating back to around 2300BC, shows him carrying a rather stylish backpack. Other fellas kept their plant-fibre pouches hanging from their shoulders or tied around their waists.
