IT HAS taken 40 years but for the first time in four decades, the Italian Open finally has an Italian champion in women’s singles, as Jasmine Paolini thrilled the Rome crowds while storming to the historic title.

With president Sergio Mattarella watching on, No.6 seed Paolini (below) defeated No.4 seed Coco Gauff of the United States 6-4, 6-2 in the final on Campo Centrale.
