When the energy price cap doesn't apply to us

It's different if your heating comes from communal heat network

I'M a heat network customer. Are my rates affected by the Ofgem energy price cap?

NO. The Ofgem price cap only applies to households with a direct gas or electricity supply.

If your heating comes through a communal or district heat network, your bills are set by the operator and not covered by the cap.

The operator buys the fuel to run the system and passes those costs, plus maintenance and admin charges, on to you. What you pay depends on that, not on Ofgem’s quarterly cap.

It can feel unfair when headlines say the cap is falling but your bill does not change. Operators must, however, be transparent.

They are required to explain how charges are calculated and provide a breakdown if asked. If your bills have risen, you have the right to see how.

If costs are becoming unmanageable, ask about payment options.

Some networks let customers spread payments over the year to avoid winter spikes. Others may adjust instalments if you are struggling.
