THE King and the Pope's historic meeting yesterday marked a major step in the ongoing drive for Christian unity across the world.

- BY RUSSELL MYERS

United by prayer

It was the first time a British monarch had prayed with a pontiff since Henry VIII decided to break away from Rome nearly 500 years ago during the Reformation.

But the significant moment was overshadowed by the Prince Andrew scandal back home, as pressure grew on the disgraced duke over his relationship with late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Charles, who is Supreme Governor of the Church of England, and the Pope's prayers were a symbolic moment for Anglicans and Catholics who have been striving for togetherness since the 20th century.

Archpriest of St Paul's Basilica, James Harvey, said: "For first time since the separation of the 16th century, the Pope and monarch shared an act of worship.

"Today saw a new step along the road of reconciliation." He spoke of 'many positive developments' towards "Christian unity" giving "hope for the future".

Charles and Camilla were welcomed to the Vatican by Pope Leo XIV, after driving through the iconic St. Peter's Square. They arrived at the San Damaso Courtyard, the ceremonial entrance to the Apostolic Palace.

Camilla wore a black dress with sleeves and black veil, as protocol for non-Catholic women at papal audiences dictates.

Only a handful of Catholic queens and princesses have been allowed to wear white on visits.
