Under-pressure Russell backing Rangers stars to deliver Europa victory to help win over stayaway support

- BY ANDY NEWPORT

THERE might not be quite as many eyes peering down from the stands as normal.

But Russell Martin admits his men still have to prove they can cope with intense Ibrox gaze of scrutiny.

The lumbering Light Blues have resembled rabbits caught in the headlights this season while allowing opposition to pepper Jack Butland’s goal with shots.

Some fans have clearly seen enough, with 18,000 seats left empty during Saturday's rare win over Hibs - a game overshadowed by pre-match protests outside the stadium's front door.

Swathes more will remain unfilled tonight when Rangers kick off their Europa League quest at home to Genk.

It says alot about the current mood of rebellion around Ibrox that a fanbase that has grown to adore the annual Thursday night thrill-ride across the continent is opting to sit on sofas at home. And Martin knows ifhis team are to lure the fans back, they'll have to prove they can stare opponents in the eye and not be the first to blink.

He said: “The atmosphere at the Panathinaikos and Plzen games have been brilliant.

“Tthought the fans were great on Saturday, and obviously after the start of the game and stuff, I thought they were brilliant by the end.

“So we just have to keep winning football matches and putting in performances. I don't think it's surprising the cup game wasn't full up. It is what it is. But, we can't ask any more from the fans and how they've been actually inside the stadium.
