PERMANENT traffic lights are to be placed on an historic bridge linking Anglesey with the North Wales mainland. Once installed on Menai Suspension Bridge, these will operate around the clock.

Suspension bridge to get permanent traffic lights

The Welsh Government has issued an advance notice of upcoming maintenance work on the crossing. This has been ongoing since 2023 when defective hangers were found on the structure, requiring replacement.

When the works have been active, temporary traffic lights controlled bridge traffic with one lane closing and the other staying open.

This has usually seen both lanes reopen in the evenings and sometimes for longer periods when work is paused.

Now the Welsh Government's transport department is to replace them with permanent lights which will stay in place 24/7 until the next phase is complete.

This will allow parapet refurbishment and painting to be completed, said the department. For this, contractor Spencer Bridge Engineering will be deploying its AeroTruss system, an innovative moving access setup that will enable safe access to the bridge's underdeck.
