A VILLAGE pub that a Hollywood star helped the community to buy has now been named one of the best in the UK. The Glan yr Afon has been at the heart of the village of Pennal, near Machynlleth, for many decades.

Actor Matthew Rhys at The Glan yr Afon pub
It was placed up for sale in 2022 and the community wanted to ensure its future by taking over the site - launching a fundraising effort. This caught the attention of Welsh film and TV star Matthew Rhys, as his father grew up in the area.
This saw him pop in to the pub and give his backing to the campaign. It proved a success with Menter y Glan securing the funds to purchase the village pub and restaurant through a share offer and money from the Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund.
