MS WELCOMES RESILIENCE WORKS BUT SLAMS WG ON TIMESCALE

Bridge upgrade progress 'woefully inadequate'

GOVERNMENT progress on improving the resilience of the A55 Britannia Bridge has been labelled “woefully inadequate”.

Ynys Mon MS Rhun ap Iorwerth said drivers on both sides of the Menai Strait had been waiting years for upgrades that have yet to happen.

The Plaid leader scoffed at Welsh Government claims a third crossing was still on the agenda, suggesting that ship had sailed.

Frustration has been boiling over since last month's closure of the Menai Suspension Bridge, the second time it has closed without warning in three years.

In an update, as reported in yesterday's Daily Post, Cardiff confirmed variable speed limits are to be introduced on the bridge.

Wind deflectors, to reduce bridge closures in bad weather, could also be added.

Further work has been commissioned to assess the practicality of a three-lane tidal flow system.
